Best Ever Birthday Bash: Bill turns 450

Hey Kids!

Didn’t we have a great time at Bill’s Birthday Bash?  Here are some links highlighting the day in Stratford-upon-Avon:

Our own festivities began with a parade led by our own bugle and band corps followed by the passing of the quill from the Bard himself to our Head Student.  We then unfurled the flags, presented flowers at the grave, read birthday poems, ate cake and ice cream, Skyped across the pond with Anjna and Lisa from the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in Stratford-upon-Avon, and competed in a Shakespeare Academic Bowl with the parents and Fr. Joseph.   Without actually flying into Heathrow, we think we did a spot on job of celebrating like the Brits.  Some of our students even prepared homemade Elizabethan dishes!  You can see our festivities here:

  1. Hi Mrs. Donofrio!
My favorite part of the Shakespeare’s Birthday Party would have to be the Shakespeare Trivia Game. I thought it was cool that some parents participated and that they knew most of the answers. Do you plan on having a trivia game at Shakespeare’s Birthday Party next year?

    • Hi Megan,

I loved the trivia game, too. I would really like to have it again next year, but am afraid you kids will slam dunk as you know so many answers now! I will have to think of another activity that is just as fun and bring the game back another year. Let me know if you have any ideas. Maybe I can get some fencers to come and give us fencing/dueling lessons or some make-up artists to teach us some tricks of their trade. I’ll be on the look-out this year!

  2. Hello Mrs.Donofrio!
My favorite part of thebirthday party was the Skype call. It is amazing how we can talk personally with somebody all the way across the country face to face like that. I think that it was awesome that we could ask the Shakespeare experts questions and get exact answers!
I think I will probably remember Shakespeare’s plays the most, because there are a lot of references to them in books, T.V. shows, movies, and plays. There are also a lot of remakes of his plays too. What is your favorite thing to learn about Shakespeare?

    • Hi Katie,
I agree with you; I thought the best part of the day was the Skype visit as well. Playing Shakespeare trivia with the parents was a close second, though. I was so happy that the technology worked! We really could see and hear Anjna and Lisa quite well, and it was just so neat to speak face to face with Shakespearean experts who work right in the Bard’s home. That was a highlight not only of the day for me, but of my entire teaching career.
I’m glad you will remember the plays, and I agree again; there are a lot of allusions to them in modern media. Without reading Shakespeare, all those references would go right over our heads.
One of my favorite parts of learning about Shakespeare is all the words and phrases he invented. We say so many of them every day and don’t even realize we are quoting Shakespeare! Well, I must go. Parting is such sweet sorrow that I will say good night ’til it be morrow.

  3. Hi Mrs. Donofrio!
My favourite part of the party was skyping with the Shakesperian historians from Stratford-upon-Avon! In years to come I will probably remember that he was the playwrite who made Romeo and Juliet, and that my Language Arts teacher really liked him. I also will probably remember what country he was born in. Wich is England.

  4. Wow
It does sound like you managed to cover a huge range of activities for the 450th celebrations. I do think that Skyping experts sounds amazing and I am sure that was enjoyed by the students and the parents. Nice to see all the photographs from the event as well. Awesome.

    • Hi Mr. Webb,
Thank you so much for commenting on our blog! We are always happy to have new visitors, and especially so when they leave us lovely comments. Your blog was one of the very first blogs I visited two years ago when I was just beginning to blog. I remember a talent show video you posted, and I also think it was your class that drew a diagram of a classroom through a written description you received via your blog. If that isn’t correct, I apologize. So far I haven’t posted any videos that we have made ourselves, but that is on my list to do this year. Thanks again for visiting. I will see you soon in Room One!

  5. Hello Mrs. Donofrio,

My favorite activity we did to celebrate Shakespeare’s 450th birthday was when we had the trivia. My team didn’t do very well, but it was still fun! When I am older I will probably remember that Shakespeare died on the same that he was born! What was your favorite past of that birthday bash?
