A Day of Rememberance

Today we remember all of those affected by the events of September 11, 2001. We remember them in our actions by doing good deeds for others, and we remember them in our thoughts by continuing to pray for all the families and friends left behind, as well as for all those who are currently first responders and military personnel. In class we looked at the Facebook 9/11 I Will page and thought about what good deeds we can do so that we continue to make America a good place to live.

One of the good deeds our school does is collect soda can tabs for the Shriners.  They in turn recycle the aluminum and use the money to support their Children’s Burn and Orthopedic Hospitals.  The Shriners provide completely free care for their pediatric patients.

What good deed can you do this week or this month as a way to commemorate the lives of all those affected by September 11th?

We've collected over 400 pounds of soda tabs over the last five years.

  1. Thank you Mrs. D for sharing this site with the students. They were but babies when this tragedy occurred. Let us all remember to never forget those who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom. There will always be
people who want to bring us down but together we are strong enough to stand up for what we believe in… God and he has truly blessed us in many
ways. God bless the USA : )

    • We are so glad to have you visiting our blog, Mrs. Brooks. Thank you for leaving such a thoughtful comment. Each one of us is reponsible for making our country strong, and we do that by using the gifts God gave us to our best abilities. Thank you for reminding us of that with your comment.

  2. Hi Mrs. Donofrio,
I still remember every moment of my day on September 11th, 2001. I was in a new school, with a new class. Most students arrived at school having already seen the unimaginable. How could this be happening? We only had questions that day.
Frankly, we are all left questioning following such tragedy. And we feel helpless.
I believe the powerless feelings can only be remedied by community and by action for good.
Last year our class theme was Do Good. Your actions, though they seem small (they are just can tabs after all), make an impact on others. And the restore hope.
Your as individuals and as a school community are making a difference.
    Huzzah! to you. Well done.

    • Thank you for your kind words, Ms. Smith. I, too, remember quite a bit of September 11, 2001. The weather was gorgeous. I had just dropped my new kindergartener off at school and was at home with my two toddlers. Our idyllic world came to a halt that morning.
Perhaps you will join us on October 26th, Make a Difference Day, in doing good for others. Have you heard of this day in Canada? I will send you a link soon, but right now, I have to attend to pressing morning routines.
Enjoy your day with all your Huzzahnians. I hope it is AWESOME!

  3. Hi! My name is Michaela! I like the pictures you chose for this blog! I think its cool how your school does things to make America a good place to live. I think this was a good blog title because a lot of people died this day and it really is a day to remember. I hope you can come visit my blog and leave a comment @2018may.endublogs.org

    • Hello Michaela,
Thank you for visiting us and leaving a comment. I visited your blog, and I left a comment. I found your post about improving school interesting. As a teacher, I have a lot of homework to do. Actually, I bet I do more homework than my students! I don’t like it much either, so I sympathize with you. However, if I didn’t do homework, I wouldn’t have any lessons prepared. No papers would get graded or corrected. We wouldn’t have a class blog, and the students wouldn’t have their own blogs. I wouldn’t respond to any emails I get from parents. School would be much more boring and less effective if I didn’t do homework. So even though I agree, homework isn’t always fun and it takes a lot of time away from activities we’d rather be doing, it is necessary for learning. We hope you come back to visit our blog again, and we will certainly visit you!
      Your new blogging buddies,

  4. Hi, my name is Olivia. I was so little during 9/11 and don’t really remember anything of it. I think that the soda can tab idea is really cool. I also think that trying to raise money for the Children’s Burn and Orthopedic Hospitals is a great idea and is really thoughtful. I hope you can visit my blog and leave a comment @2018ojb.edublogs.org.

    • Thank you for visiting us, Olivia! I did visit your blog, and I left a comment. I enjoyed your post about improving your school. We look forward to connecting with you during the year.
