Under the Blood Red Sun webquest

The novel, Under the Blood Red Sun by Graham Salisbury, introduced us to people, places and things with which we had very limited knowledge.  Through reading the book, we learned a bit more about: the attack on Pearl Harbor, World War II, Hawaii, Japanese culture, pigeon racing, and baseball in 1941.  Today we will increase our knowledge base even more as we delve into these areas via a webquest.

Please answer these questions as a comment on this post.  This counts as a homework grade for all my kids, but we’d love to hear from people around the world, too.  Perhaps we’ll hear from someone who lived through World War II, or who lives in Japan or Hawaii.

  13. 1 I think it is pretty slow, but that makes up for how short the lyrics are being it is one of the shortest national anthems in use today. It says that it wishes Japan to reign forever.
2 It is pronounced “JESSHIKA”. (Consonants are pronounced more or less the same way as in English. “A” sounds like a in father, but shorter. “I” sounds like ee in meet, but shorter. “E” sounds like e in met.)

6.) Under the Blood Red Sun was a story about a Japanese American boy named Tomi, and his Japanese family. After the attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, Oahu, his life changes. He is watched everywhere he goes, and no one trusts him, except for the Rats. Only his baseball team, family and close friends help him in his life after his dad and ojii-chan was arrested. Now he is the man of the house. I liked the book, but I think the beginning is boring. Not enough action I think. Almost every book has a slow beginning, but for some reason this beginning I didn’t like all that much.

  16. 1) Kimi Ga Yo. I agree with Tomi the song is very slow and boring. It talks about how Japan has and wants freedom for their country.

  40. 1.Kimi Ga Yo is definitely a slow song but not the slowest I’ve ever heard. The song asks for Japan to reign 10,000 years. One record the song holds is to be one of the shortest anthems ever.
2.My name looks like and I, U and V written in cursive next to each other. Consonants are pronounced more or less the same way as in English. “I” sounds like ee in meet, but shorter. “E” sounds like e in met.
3.Polynesians from the Marquesas Islands first set foot on Hawaii Island. I would consider them to be the founders. About 1,000 years ago, settlers from Tahiti arrived having brought with them their beliefs in gods and demi-gods. In 1820, the first Protestant missionaries arrived in Hawaii. Western disease took a heavy toll on the Native Hawaiian population. In 1893, American Colonists who controlled much of Hawaii’s economy and overthrew the Hawaiian Kingdom. In 1898 Hawaii became a territory of the United States. Today, Hawaii is a global gathering place for visitors to share in the spirit of the Islands. Hawaii has developed such a diverse population because of the different settlers that have come to the island. One interesting thing that I learned is that Hawaiian culture introduced the art of surfing.
4.Be prepared by bringing lots of supplies such as water, and a good charged flashlight. 61. Greetings Mrs. Donofrio,
Here are my answers to the questions on this homework assignment webquest.

    1. The song that Grandpa sings on page 79 of the novel is the national anthem of Japan called “Kimigayo.” I do not agree with Tomi’s description of “Kimigayo” as the slowest song in history but it is still an extremely slow song. A record that the Japanese national anthem holds is the world’s shortest nation anthem in use today because of its length of only 11 measures and 32 characters. The song asks for Japan to reign for thousands of years to come.

    2. I could not spell Michael in the Japanese alphabet because I don’t have it programmed on my computer. My name Michael is spelled and pronounced “Maikeru” in Japanese. Although consonant sounds are pronounced differently while saying “Maikeru.” “A” sounds like a in father, but shorter. “I” sounds like ee in meet, but shorter. “U” sounds like oo in hook, but with less rounding of the lips. “E” sounds like e in met.

    3. There are many reasons different cultures and ethic groups are in Hawaii. Polynesians from the Marquesas Islands were the first to set foot on Hawaii Island. Polynesians sailed over 2000 miles in canoes to migrate to the Hawaii islands. 500 years later, settlers from Tahiti arrived bringing the Kapu system with them. In 1778, Captain James Cook opened the doors west to Hawaii for future immigration. In 1820, Protestant missionaries traveled to Hawaii and filled the empty places for settling. Hawaii then became a port for seaman, traders, and whalers, making the whaling industry boom bringing more cultures to Hawaii. Western influence continued to grow in time and in 1893, American Colonists took over Hawaii and its economy peacefully. In 1898, Hawaii joined as a territory to the United States. In the 1900’s, sugarcane and pineapple plantations controlled Hawaii’s economy bringing Japanese, Chinese, Filipino and Portuguese immigrants. Today, people are attracted to the sun, beach, and surfing giving another reason for people to settle in Hawaii. These are all reasons why the mix of immigrant ethnicities makes Hawaii’s population so diverse today. Another interesting piece of information I read was during the years of growth for Hawaii, western disease killed a large amount of Native Hawaii population. I also learned Hawaii was separated into factions and was unified by Kamehamha into one royal kingdom in 1810.

    4. I learned to bring a lot of water while viewing volcanoes because the air temperature can be extremely hot. Wear boots or shoes, long pants, and gloves to avoid any burns. Bring a flashlight to stay away from any hazards during nighttime. Don’t go over to an area where lava is burning over vegetation because there could be an explosion of methane gas. Do not get close to a lava beach because there are many ways you could get killed.

    5. Joe DiMaggio won an accolade in 1941 and Whit Wyatt placed in third for the 1941 National League MVP Award. The Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Yankees played in the World Series. The Yankees ended up winning the World Series.

    6. I really enjoyed the novel Under The Blood Read Sun because of the constant action and excitement, a great setting, and a different point of view from a Japanese American during the attack on Pearl Harbor. I also liked the characters Graham Salisbury picked to tell the story such as Tomi, Mose, Rico, Billy, Ojii-chan, Sanji, and the antagonist Keet. All the characters have different backgrounds, cultures, personalities, and some characters represent something like Billy the good people of America and Keet the disgraceful and mean. I would defiantly recommend this book for anyone to read and I thank Mrs. Donofrio for picking a wonderful novel.

  67. 1. Kimigayo was the name of the song.
Yes, I also thought the song was very slow.
The Kimigayo is currently one of the shortest anthems in the world. It asks for Japan to reign for many years.
    2. It is pronounced “MEGAN”. The consonants are pronounced more or less the same way as in English. “A” sounds like a in father, but shorter. “E” sounds like e in met.
    3. I learned that Polynesians first discovered Hawaii, in 1778 Captain James Cook named the archipelago the “Sandwich Island” in honor of the Earl of Sandwich, in 1898 it officially became part of the United States, and in 1959 it became the 50th state and was named the “Aloha State”.
    4. Lava viewing is very dangerous and you need boots/sneakers, long pants, gloves, and three quarts of water of you want to be save while doing it. I also learned that lava benches form when lava flows into the ocean and then hardens.
    5. Dolph Camilli won the MVP award. The Dodgers and the Yankees played, and the Yankees won the 1941 World Series.
    6. UBRS was about a boy named Tomikazu and the bombing of Pearl Harbor. In the story, Tomi has to become the man of the house because his Papa and Ojii-chan were arrested. Tomi learns to stick up for himself and to control himself. I liked the book a lot, because I learned a lot of things I never knew before about World War 2. I also liked how Graham Salsbury made Billy all the good things about America and how Keet represents all the bad things about America. I thought it was really cool how he did that.

  68. The song is Kimigayo, Japan’s National Anthem. I agree it is a VERY slow song but I do like the drums in the background. A record it holds it that it is the shortest National Anthem. The song asks that the King reign forever.

My name sounds like Burukku. U’s sound just like the English “U” or oo sound

I think the reason that Hawaii is filled has so many different types of people is because people were either exploring for their own type of land, coming because they felt there religion was sending them there, or because they were trying to use the island to make a new home.

I didn’t know the ground was so uneven and dangerous.
The Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Yankees played in the 1941 World Series. The Yankees won. Dolph Camilli won MVP

I liked the book Under the Blood Red Sun but I didn’t like the part where the dad had to go to jail because he was Japanese and didn’t have an American flag on his boat.
