The Gamble Plantation on PhotoPeach
To complete the study of our novel, Elijah of Buxton, we took a field trip to the Gamble Plantation, the only antebellum mansion in South Florida.
Have you ever visited an historic home? What did you learn there?
Hello Mrs.Donofrio,
I have been to Rose hall in Jamaica where slaves used to work. I learned at Gamble plantation that Robert Gamble had a sugarcane farm and it got hit by 2 hurricanes. Also I learned that the they bathed in the same bathwater once a week.
Extra credit for you, Anthony! We heard the same story about the bathwater in our group. Kind of yucky, huh? I thought they had lots of clever ways to keep the house cool before the invention of air conditioning: the two-foot thick walls, painting the house white to reflect the heat, the porch that shaded the house, the cross-ventilation, and keeping the kitchen in a separate building.
Would you like to have lived in the 1800s?
