Haul out the holly!  Today we shared stories about our family holiday traditions.  We heard about travels to visit family, matching pajamas for the family, Michael Buble Christmas music, Polish Oplatek, an Egg Nog chugging contest, the Filipino high jump,  an Advent Calendar and of course, cookies!   When presenting our reports, we remembered to SMILE Smile and make eye contact, Motivational aid, Interesting information, Length of two minutes, and Elocution.

  1. Dear Brooke and her wonderful classmates,
Once again, I found myself “smiling” as I shared your wonderful pictures and stories. Christmas is such a magical time of the year and it is still my very favorite! What touched me the most while enjoying your presentations was the simplicity of your favorite Christmas traditons….it truly is the little things that matter most.
One of my favorite Christmas traditions is to share my good fortune with those in our community who are not as blessed as I am. It is easy to do, donate old toys, games and clothes to organizations that help the needy. You will be receiving many new gifts and it is always so much more meaningful to give then to receive. You might choose to visit a nursing home and share your stories with the sweet folks that live there and if you do, I can promise you that you will put a smile on many a face.
Thank you again for allowing me to be a part of your classroom and for spreading a little Christmas cheer! I wish all of you a very, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
    Take care,
    Mrs. Chonody

    • Dear Mrs. Chonody,
Thank you so much for visiting and commenting. We are all happy to see you back again. I am so glad you mentioned the nursing home. We just had a class of 7th and 8th graders bring shawls they had knitted to a nursing home. The visit is part of our prayer shawl ministry, and it is done in collaboration with the art and religion classes, as well as with the help of some lovely volunteers from our community. The kids knit and pray for the recipient of the shawl they are knitting. Then they give the shawl to someone at the nursing home around Christmas time. They sing carols together, and this year one of our students played the violin. One year we had quite a few bilingual students, and the kids learned to pray in Spanish, French, German and Italian as they were knitting. As you said, the sweet folks who live in the nursing home were all smiles the day our kids visited. It is good for our students, too, to see the impact their actions have on others. Thanks for reminding us about giving joy this season as we eat our cookies, decorate our tree, and open our own gifts. Merry Christmas!

  2. Wow Mrs D! That is a great slideshow! I think it is cool how you put pretty much everybody on there. Even though I’m not in every class, I got to see kids in other grades projects.
Thanks for showing us all those cool traditions everybody! Mrs D, what is your favorite holiday tradition?

    • Hi Dia,
I am writing to you from my hotel room at the Contemporary in Orlando. I just saw a great fireworks display over Cinderella’s castle set to Christmas music. It was so cool. I wish all you kids were here. If I could, I would bring you all here, plus my own family, and start a new tradition. It really is magical, I have to say.
Since moving to Venice from New England, my holiday traditions have changed a lot. I used to see all my family over the holidays, and that was fun. When I was a kid, I really liked going to my grandparents’ house on Christmas Eve and seeing my cousins from Virginia. It was dark when we drove home, and I spent almost the entire hour in the car looking for Rudolph’s nose in the sky. Sometimes I would see a red light from a radio tower, and I would imagine it was Rudolph’s nose. I’d tell my mom to hurry and get home because Santa was on his way.
Now that we’re in Florida, we don’t have any extended family around. I’m glad my husband and I have have four kids, because even if it’s just us, we’re still a pretty good sized group. We host a Christmas party each year, and I really like that. I also like to drive around town and see the lights, especially at one house in Mission Valley in particular. They go all out and let you walk around the their yard. The man who lives there stands in his yard passing out peppermint candies. Lots of families go every night throughout the month of December. Although I miss the snow, I do like being able to enjoy the lights without freezing my toes off. I keep telling myself that there was no snow in Bethlehem either.
Other traditions I like are reading an Advent story book with my kids each night, and the Jammytime we do at Epiphany each year. I also like going ice skating at the rink and hearing the Christmas music as we glide around on the ice.
      See you soon, Dia!

  3. Hello Mrs. Donofrio’s class!
I really liked the slideshow about your classes presentations! I thought that was pretty cool.
I too, love Christmas! It’s my favourite time of the year, by far. I also LOVE cookies! (Chocolate chip to be exact) Whats your favourite type?
    ~Elysa from Huzzah

    • Hi Elysa,
Thanks for watching our slideshow. We also love Christmas! I am still at Disney World, but when I get back to my school tomorrow, we will take a poll and find out what kind of cookie is the most favorite. I like chocolate chip, too, but at Christmas time I also like biscotti and a Swedish Almond cookie bar. Gingerbread is good, too!
