Meeting new friends

Hey Kids!

We’d like to introduce everyone to some new blogging buddies, Mrs. Rovira’s 7th grade class in Southern California.  They are middle school students and are looking to connect with other student bloggers.

Mrs. Rovira's blog 001

After reading some posts on their blog, I know that Mrs. Rovira’s class is reading Red Scarf Girl.  I also learned that they are from Orange County, a place I’ve never been.

Here is a blogging challenge for our new and old friends:  What book do you like, and what place would you like to visit?   I hope all our family members will participate as part of our last week of Family Blogging Month.

Mrs. Donofrio’s picks:  Gone With the Wind– when I read this book as a sophomore in high school, I’d set my alarm for 5 am so I could read before school.  This year, 31 years after I read the book, we are planning a summer vacation to Atlanta, the setting of GWTW, and I can’t wait!

  1. Dear Mrs. Donofrio,
A book that I like is called One for the Murphys. After reading it for my most recent book report, I decided it is my new favorite. One for the Murphys is what I call an edge-of-your-seat book that touched my heart. I recommended it to all of my friends and even my mom because a person of almost any age would enjoy it. I read it while I was on vacation in South Carolina, and when we got back to the hotel room the day I started it, I stayed up until 3:30 a.m. reading it! (No exaggeration, ask Cooper.) I sure was tired in the morning, but it was worth finishing it.

The main character in One for the Murphys, Carley Connors, is from Las Vegas. I went there when I was 10 years old, and I had SO much fun. There are so many things to do! I would like to visit it again someday.
    Keep reading, everyone!

  2. Hey Mrs. Donofrio!

My favorite book is called ‘Rumble Fish”. I read it over the summer before entering 7th grade. The author of the book is S.E. Hinton, the author of the “Outsiders”. If I could visit one place it would either be Los Angeles, California, The Bahama’s, or Italy. There are many more places but that is all I can think of right now. Do you have any other places you would like to visit?

  3. One of my favorite books was The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Normally, I don’t really get into book series’, but the the Hunger Games was actually very interesting. One place in the world I have always wanted to visit is Paris. Every one who has been there says it’s the most beautiful place in the world. I have a lot of places I want to visit, but I want to see Paris the most!

What makes the setting of “Gone With The Wind’ so interesting?

    -Mallory

    • Hi Mallory,
Gone With the Wind took place in Atlanta during the Civil War. When the story begins, Atlanta is beautiful. The characters visit each other’s plantations, sip mint juleps on porches, and life is grand. By the middle of the story, Atlanta has been besieged by the Union soldiers; Scarlet O’Hara’s beloved city is burned nearly to the ground. Fallen soldiers lie everywhere. Of course, Atlanta rallies, and rebuilds herself to her present glory. I want to go there to see the history of the South and the modern day wonder it has become.

  4. Dear Mrs. Donofrio,

My favorite book has to be a two-way tie. My top 2 favorite books are The Outsiders and Maniac Magee. I like them both because they are exciting the entire book. I get bored pretty easily when I’m reading, but these 2 books really blew me away. I recommend them.

I would love to go to Greece on a vacation. I really like the Ancient Greek architecture. The Parthenon is, in my opinion, the most incredible building on Earth. It was built in 483 BC. It is astonishing that it was built 2497 years ago and is still standing today. I also love the Greek mythology stories.

    Mitch

    • Hi Mitch,
I agree with you. I’d also love to go to Greece for the same reasons you state. Not only would I love to walk up the Acropolis, as you said, but I’d also love to visit the Greek islands and see the beautiful, blue Mediterranean. The whole Greek culture, the music, the food, the art, is appealing to me, and I’d love to experience it firsthand. Maybe we will go one day on a family vacation!
      Love, Mom (a.k.a. Mrs. Donofrio)

      • Hello! I think Greek mythology is interesting too. Mitch, you are right when you said that the Parthenon is incredible because it was built so long ago but is still standing. The Parthenon currently stands 45 feet tall, and 228 by 101 feet wide. It was partly destroyed on September 26,1687 by the Venetians. Scientists, archeologists, and contractors are trying to recreate the damaged parts right now. If your family ever goes on a trip to Greece, take plenty of pictures and tell me how it went! DIA

  5. Hi Mrs. Donofrio,
My favorite book is Murder At Midnight. I love this book because it keeps you on the edge of your seat! The book also gave me some history info. It taught me more about the Printing Press. How people were able to print, what they printed, and how they did it. Since that book took place in Italy, that’s where I would LOVE to visit. Italy is beautiful, and has delicious food! Have you ever been to another country?

    ~Louis

    • Hi Louis,
I have been to England, Wales, Ireland, Canada, and Mexico. I went to all of those places when I was young, in my teens or early twenties. I studied English literature at Cambridge University in England the summer after I graduated college. It was one of the best summers of my life. I really enjoyed learning in the same buildings that some of the greatest English poets had studied in. It was so neat to walk up stone staircases that had been worn down in the middle by the footsteps of students and their professors for the past 800 years. The United States didn’t even exist when Cambridge opened its doors to its first students. We used to have dinner at long wooden tables, and we were served by waiters. Think Hogwarts. If you ever have the chance to study abroad when you are in college, Louis, I hope you are able to take it. “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” ~St. Augustine.

  6. Hello Mrs Donofrio! My favorite book is The Complete Collection of Sherlock Holmes. It is not really one book, but a collection of short stories. I found this book at the top of my bookshelf and decided to read it about two years ago.
I would like to visit Pompeii and Herculanium, the cities where Mount Vesuvius’ eruption occured. I would like to go there to see the volcano and to learn about the things they found buried in ash. I would also like to go to Greece, and see all the temples and statues there. Although, I realize that it is not the best time to go there. DIA

    • Hi Dia,
Do you ever think of becoming an archeologist? Visiting Pompeii and Herculanium are fantastic sites to unearth life from another time.
I have not read any Sherlock Holmes books, but I did have a Sherlock Holmes game when I was younger. It was called 221B Baker St. I loved that game and played for hours whenever my friend, Luanne, slept over. I did read some Agatha Christie books when I was either in middle school or early high school. One in particular I liked was called And Then There Were None. It’s about 10 people who are guests (I think on an island) and they go missing one by one. Each time one of them disappears, the rest of the guests find a rhyme similar to Ten Little Indians. Do you know that rhyme?
I will put Sherlock on my summer reading list!
      Good night, Dia!

  7. Hi Mrs. Donofrio,
while it is hard to pick out a single book out of all of the books I have read, one book that stood out was How To Kill A Mockingbird. While it is an old book, it still has a timeless classic feel to it. Its story is very hooking and interesting. It helped me understand what the olden days in the South were like, even though blacks were free. It made them seem like they were still under the control of whites, and they could do anything they wanted to them. Of course the book shows how wrong that was.
If I had to pick one spot to visit in the entire world, it would have to be the Adirondacks in New York. It’s a place in New York surrounded by mountains, and it has a very peaceful atmosphere. I go up there once a year, and it helps me relax a lot. If you could go anywhere in the world, that you have already been to, where would you go?

  8. Hey Mrs. Donofrio! I was really happy to see a great comment from Mrs. Rovira on my Haunted Mansion post. I left a really nice comment on her newest post. I just wanted to let you know. I also want to thank you for starting this whole blogging thing. It’s the best! See you tomorrow and hope to blog you later.
    Love, Hannah

  9. Hi Mrs. Donofrio,
my favorite book would have to be The Book of Elsewhere and my ideal vacation spot would be Hawaii so I could see all the cool sites and maybe even see a volcano!
    ~Baylee

  10. Hi Ms. Donofrio,

My favorite book in the world is Animal Farm. The details are so amazing that I can almost see it happening right before my eyes. The details are so vivid and the nouns so specific! I also loved the moral of the story.

The place I would love to visit, though, is Africa. The reason I would like to go there is to see all of the wildlife and to get away from all of the gas and pollution. To get the real wildlife, no fences, no highways, just miles and miles of trees and animals. Have you ever been to Africa? Well, see you tomorrow!
    Xoxoxoxoxo,

    Ellie
