Welcome Back to School!

Welcome Back to School on PhotoPeach

Hey Kids!
Welcome back to school! I am very happy to see you all again, and I am looking forward to a great year where we will love, learn, and soar!
As you watch the video of our first day at school, listen to the lyrics. How are they appropriate for the beginning of a new school year? How do you feel about the first day of school?

Upside Down by Jack Johnson
Who’s to say
What’s impossible
Well they forgot
This world keeps spinning
And with each new day
I can feel a change in everything
And as the surface breaks reflections fade
But in some ways they remain the same
And as my mind begins to spread its wings
There’s no stopping curiosity

I want to turn the whole thing upside down
I’ll find the things they say just can’t be found
I’ll share this love I find with everyone
We’ll sing and dance to Mother Nature’s songs
I don’t want this feeling to go away

Who’s to say
I can’t do everything
Well I can try
And as I roll along I begin to find
Things aren’t always just what they seem

I want to turn the whole thing upside down
I’ll find the things they say just can’t be found
I’ll share this love I find with everyone
We’ll sing and dance to Mother Nature’s songs
This world keeps spinning and there’s no time to waste
Well it all keeps spinning spinning round and round and

Upside down
Who’s to say what’s impossible and can’t be found
I don’t want this feeling to go away

  1. Hi guys its Matt and I think these words are approprite for school because, it say’s things like, as my mind begins to spread its wings there’s no stopping curiosity. And I was really exited about school and I can’t wait to do more stuff as a seventh grader.

  2. I think that this song is appropriate for the beginning of the school year because the verses “And with each new day, I can feel a change in everything, and as the surface breaks reflections fade, but in some ways they remain the same” can mean that when you come back to school and you are in a different grade and doing things differently but your friends are the same. It can also mean that in the beginning of the year everything can be different but you can start new again. This took me a few tries and I had to listen to the song and look at the lyrics a few times, but I think I ended up coming up with a good answer. I like the first day of school because you get to see your friends.

  3. I think the song is appropriate for the school year because nothing is impossible and you can do things that others can’t. I was excited about school and nervous at the same time.

  4. Hey, Mrs. Donofrio! I loved the slideshow! I hope everyone has a fantastic school year and learns a lot. Of coarse, if you are their teacher the education will be phenomenal. This song states that the sun will always arise the next day ,and I think that’s a wonderful thing to teach your students! I will always keep you and the class in my prayers and hopefully you can find someone to replace me and my hiccups in the middle of class. I’m sure Frankie and Mitch will be jumping in their seats to volunteer. I wish you and the best eighth grade class ever a great year and Disney trip! I send you all my love.
P.S. I’ll be commenting now and then so keep a look out

    • Jessica!
I have never been so happy to have the blog as I am now so that we can keep you as a virtual classmate. We will also keep you in our prayers, and on our prayer board. It is pretty ironic that you and your dad are on the first slide of our Welcome Back to School slideshow. I’m glad we can see your smiling face whenever we want. The lyrics of the song are particularly moving and appropriate now, aren’t they? Keep up the great work and attitude that makes you Jessica. This is not good-bye, just farewell until we see you again. Let us know all the great things you are learning. Perhaps your new class would like to blog with us? What did you learn in Language Arts today? We are thinking of you, praying for you, missing you, and loving you. You will continue to love, learn and soar wherever you are.
      Your teacher,
      Mrs. Donofrio

  5. Hey, Mrs. Donofrio
Every time I see this slide show, there’s Jessica first thing with her big smile just like every other morning. We will all miss her. We should be seeing her at the pancake breakfast’s though. I’m excited for the rest of this school year it should be a fun year. Are you excited? What is usually your favorite part of the school year?
    -Heather

    • Hi Heather,
I agree with you about the first day of school slide show. It is pretty ironic that Jessica is on the very first slide. I miss her, too. Eighth grade is a fun year, I agree with that observation, too. Lots of activities are on the calendar for the graduating class. You have already had a special breakfast, and the dance is right around the corner. My favorite part of the year is the Medieval Fair and Shakespeare’s Birthday. What are you most looking forward to in eighth grade?

  6. Dear Mrs. Donofrio,

Back to school Is fun because you get to see your friends. You get to meet new friends and you don’t know, maybe they will be your best-est friend in the world. You get to learn new things that you don’t know.

    ~Kaiah

    • Hello Kaiah!
I agree with your assessment of back to school. The anticipation of a new school year is always exciting. There is such promise in a new box of pencils, with erasers as yet unused!
I teach the same kids for grades 6, 7, & 8, so aside from meeting new students, I always like to see how my old students have grown over the summer. Sometimes the 7th grade boys who were just an inch or so shorter than I am are an inch taller than I am when 8th grade begins!
This year our school has a new principal, a new 4th grade teacher, and a new Spanish teacher, so you never know, I may have a new friend-in-the-making. Of course, I consider Huzzah! to be our best blogging buddy!
What new things have you already learned this year?
      ~Mrs. Donofrio

  7. Hey Mrs. Donofrio
I think the song was appropriate because it sends a good message of basically nothing is impossible. I like the first day of school because I get to see my freinds, but after the first day it is all down hill from there.
    -Frankie

  8. Hi Mrs.Donofrio
The lyrics in this song is appropriate for the first day of school because it gives us a little glimpse of what the school year might hold for us. The lyrics say that while some things are hard, we’ll keep on trying and things will change for the better( hopefully). I returned here after being gone for two years in Louisiana, and saw many old faces that first day of school. Do you think every year in Epiphany is different or are you usually expected some of the same things every year?

    • Hi Ben,
I think every year is different to some degree, but certainly this year is very different as we have a new principal at the helm. Of course, a lot is the same. I am in the same classroom, teaching most of the same material, with the same teachers, and to a lot of the same kids. I hope that we will have a great year, which is something I hope every year, so that stays the same, too.
      ~Mrs. Donofrio

  9. Hi Mrs. Donofrio
I think the songs lyrics are great because it shows a learning experience.
My first day of school was just trying to understand everything.
