Hear ye, Hear ye!

Let it be known throughout the land that official preparations for the annual Medieval Fair have begun!  Our artisans created banners and coats of arms in order to transform our courtyard into a Middle Ages marketplace for peasants and priests, jousters and jugglers, knights and nobility.

While we worked, we also listened to Medieval music.  Here is a link to some music that will bring you back to the days of lords and ladies, serfs, knights, mummers and minstrels.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPkLhSVtPS4

Have you ever read any stories about life in the Middle Ages?

Have you heard of King Arthur, Beowulf, or Robin Hood?  Have you read the books Crispin by Avi or Sent by Margaret Peterson Haddix?

Would you like to live in the Middle Ages?

  1. Goodspeed Lady Donofrio,
I am very exited to go to the wonderful fair and I am hoping to try some mead, Beowulf favorite drink. I have not yet been able to read Sent but I have enjoyed reading Crispin. Have you read the book Murder at Midnight and the book Magic at Midnight they are very interesting books. Hmmm would I like to live in the Middle Ages I think I wold but of course being a noble Lady and give money to the poor like Robin Hood. Well I hope that many people are helping you make the coat of arms.
    Your faithful student,
    Lady Cogan

    • Dearest Lady Cogan,

I am quite grateful for your lovely comment. I am looking forward, as you are, to a taste of mead, a favorite drink of the warrior king, Beowulf. I am in hopes that it will be suitable for a lady as well as for warriors.
I am pleased that you are familiar with Avi’s other medieval writings. I have not yet had the opportunity to peruse these tomes, but upon your recommendation, I will add them to my Christmas reading list.
As for living in the Middle Ages, I think that like our time traveling friends in Sent, I would prefer a visit rather than a permanent arrangement. I would miss my soft bed, air conditioning and heat, a refrigerator, Publix, and the skills of our family doctor in times of illness.
      With gratitude for your correspondence,
      Lady Donofrio

  2. talking about the middle ages i rely look forward to the medieval fair next week. I also look forward to doing st. Anthony and the donkey next week.I hope we have fun practicing the play.

    • Hi Riley,
It’s great to see you on our blog while you are at home. I am looking forward to the fair and to the plays as well. I found that play over the summer and saved it because I knew it would be perfect for the fair. See you tomorrow!

  3. Mrs. Donofrio & Knights and Ladies,
Have fun with your medieval fair! It sounds like you have many wonderful activities planned!

I’ll answer two of your questions. I have read the book Timeline by Michael Crichton. It was a science fiction book of time travel back to the middle ages. After reading that book, I would not want to live in the 1400s!

    Best wishes,
    Mrs. Krebs

    • Dear Mrs. Krebs,
Thank you so much for your kind comments. We are indeed looking forward to our Fair, and it is fast approaching.
Although I have not read Timeline, I concur that life in the Middle Ages was exceedingly more difficult than the present time period. I used to think that I would like to live in the days of Laura Ingalls, but as soon as I had children who suffered a fever, or any other malady, I quickly came to the conclusion that I was most happy to live within a five minute drive of our doctor and a five dollar bottle of children’s Tylenol.

  4. 1. I’ve read lots of stories of knights, and even some about other places at the same time as europe was in it’s middle ages.
    2. Yes, I’ve heard of each. I learned about King Arthuur from the knight stories I’ve read, and the movie sword in the stone; Beowulf from a book about how he killed the dragon at the king’s aid; RObin Hood from the movies and books.
    3. Nope, I haven’t heard of either.
    4. Nah, I like our modern tech, but it would be kinda cool with all those knights, and castles, and kings.

    • Dear Isaiah,
Thank you for taking our webquest! I am pleased that you have knowledge of the great heroes of the Middle Ages. We also saw The Sword in the Stone after our Medieval Fair last week. I think visiting a castle would be great fun, but I’m not sure how I’d feel about living in one. Do you think they would be damp, dark, dirty, and cold?
We hope to see you again,
      Mrs. Donofrio
